Wandoan Under the Stars

Presenting a unique opportunity to take part in the inaugural Wandoan Under the Stars event.

10 June 2023 is the date mark in your calendar for this workshop.  

Imagine yourself under the clear big skies in the Western Downs with minimal light pollution.

An astrophotography workshop with award winning photographer, Donna Glass, of Bunya Mountain Photography, Don Hildred and Uncle Wayne Fossey.

Donna is an experienced Tourism Operator and Award-winning Artist Landscape Photographer, 

A Dark Sky Advocate with International Dark Sky Association and has taken part in Awards with Queensland Regional Arts Award. 

Being a finalist in the Merv Moriarty Landscape Awards Flying Arts, Donna also has been an entrant in the Photographer Of The Year, receiving highly commended 3 years running in the Category of Landscape, Creative.  And has a keen interest in Indigenous Astronomy.

Don Hildred is a professional commercial photographer with more than 30 years experience.  He teaches online Photography and Photoshop courses at USQ.  He enjoys teaching photography workshops and guided tours have taken him up to Northern Queensland, down to the Blue Mountains in New South Wales and over to New Zealand.

Don lives and works from the beautiful garden city of Toowoomba, and has an ASSOC DIP of Photography with Honours from QCA, Bachelor of Media with Distinctions from USQ Springfield.

As part of this opportunity, we’re excited to be able to include Indigenous story-telling and star gazing experiences, spotting the Dark Emu with Yugambeh Elder, Uncle Wayne Fossey.

Uncle Wayne’s Grandfather was an Aboriginal man with his cultural and spiritual connections to the Darling Downs.

Wayne’s background in Heath, Environmental Science and Education. Past and present roles as Secondary Principal and committees for Environmental Education, Rock-climbing and Geography.

He is Elder in Residence at University of Southern QLD across the 3 campus sites  and Vice President and Board member of Bunya Peoples Aboriginal Corporation with Rangers in Toowoomba, Bunya Mountains, and Wondai – Gummingurru Board member-Highfields Beenleigh Housing (Aboriginal)Corporation. A proud Traditional storyteller, Lecturer and researcher in Aboriginal plant, medical and night skies /Astronomy – Member of Dark Skies  Australia.

Bring your own digital camera and tripod, but it’s ok if you don’t have your own equipment, there will be plenty to share.

A delicious two course dinner cooked on a camp oven for an authentic country star-gazing experience is included in the price of the workshop $190.  The organisers also have meals available to those not wanting to take part for $35.  

Why not make a weekend of it, Wandoan has some of the regions best accommodation, Bushlander Motel, Central Motel, and Juandah Hotel.  Or you could experience some of our camping grounds.
