History of the Big Melon
Weighing more than four tonnes and measuring three metre high and nine metres wide, the bright pink watermelon slice stands pride of place on the Warrego Highway, in Chinchilla.
To celebrate their 18th birthday, Wotif, a national online travel company, launched a competition to build Australia’s next “Big Thing”.
Chinchilla, which boasts the title of being the ‘Melon Capital of Australia’ for its history and suitability for melon farming and also the exciting biennial Melon Festival, entered a bid for a Big Melon slice which beat three other finalists for the creation of an over-sized tourist attraction!
The giant slice was officially unveiled by Mayor Paul McVeigh and Wotif Managing Director, Daniel Finch in November 2018.
